This is Part 2 of a series detailing how our products are contributing to space exploration!
Previously, we shared that our infrared-light-absorbing flocked fabric, "IR Flock Sheet", was used to build a darkroom for JAXA's satellite star tracker tests. Now, further information reveals that our anti-reflection materials, "Fineshut KIWAMI" and "Musou Black Paint", are currently being used in the visible-light cameras of astronomical observation telescopes!
We recently received an order for "Fineshut KIWAMI" from Professor Nagayama of Kagoshima University's Physics and Space Program. When we asked, he confirmed the material is used in the visible-light cameras on their astronomical observation telescopes. He also provided photos of the camera's internal components, showcasing the use of both "Fineshut KIWAMI" and "Musou Black Paint" for anti-reflection purposes.

"Fineshut KIWAMI" is a well-known product among astronomy enthusiasts, previously featured by this Japanese-language article on Tenmon Reflexions. However, its application in a national university's telescope camera was a new discovery for us.
Further research showed it's also used in the 1m optical-infrared telescope at the Milky Way Galaxy Research Center, specifically for observing Mira variable stars and supernovae. Mira variables are pulsating stars in the final stages of their evolution, while supernovae are massive stellar explosions. Observing such faint objects means minimizing unwanted light is essential, which is exactly what makes the anti-reflection properties of "Fineshut KIWAMI" and "Musou Black Paint" so valuable here.
Professor Nagayama noted that these products are blacker than comparable materials and perform well on both complex shapes and flat surfaces.
"Fineshut KIWAMI" is part of the "Fineshut" series, a thin, fine-pored polyurethane sheet developed for anti-reflection in optical devices. It offers excellent optical properties and maintains high absorption in the infrared range, thanks to its textured surface. Unlike dye-based blacks, which lose absorption performance at longer wavelengths, the carbon-infused black of the "Fineshut" series maintains stable absorption from visible to infrared wavelengths. This makes it ideal for industrial cameras sensitive to near-infrared light.
We've now confirmed our anti-reflection materials are used in telescopes at the Milky Way Galaxy Research Center, demonstrating their effectiveness in astronomical observation equipment. These materials are also well suited for upgrading personal observation tools. "Fineshut KIWAMI" is available in three sizes through our official store and on Amazon. For even lower reflectivity, the new and upgraded "Fineshut KIWAMI XX" is recommended.
From "IR Flock Sheet" used in star tracker darkrooms to "Fineshut KIWAMI" and "Musou Black Paint" in telescope cameras, our products are steadily making their way toward space applications.
