The VL Flock Sheet is a highly absorbing, electrostatically flocked fabric developed to reduce reflections and stray light in the visible spectral range. Its official designation is "Visible Light Absorbing Flock Sheet", and it is the most cost-effective entry-level material of the Musou Black fabric family. It was designed for applications in which a surface simply has to appear as black as possible - for example photography and film backdrops, darkrooms, home cinemas, stage and set design, optical test setups, machine vision environments and interior design.

Why VL Flock Sheet?
Ordinary black fabrics, papers and paints look dark to the eye, but under studio lighting they still return a visible amount of light. Edges glow, folds shimmer and the black in the image turns into dark grey. Anyone who works with cameras, projectors or optical setups knows how much this residual reflection costs in terms of contrast.
The VL Flock Sheet was developed exactly for this problem. Its total reflectance in the visible light range is less than 0.5%, which makes it one of the lowest-reflection materials we offer. It absorbs 99.7% of visible light and therefore shows almost no shape, no texture and no highlights.
At the same time it is the pragmatic choice: it is significantly more affordable than our Fineshut series, it is the most durable of our fabrics and it can be touched without immediately losing its performance - unlike a painted surface. This makes it particularly attractive for large areas such as darkrooms, photo studios, home cinemas, stage sets and industrial inspection stations.

Application areas

📷 Photography backdrops
A truly black background is one of the hardest things to achieve in photography. Most black fabrics reflect enough light to reveal their weave, folds and edges, which forces photographers into complicated lighting setups or heavy retouching.
With a total reflectance of less than 0.5% in the visible range, the VL Flock Sheet renders as an almost empty black surface. It is well suited for product photography, still life, portraits, packshots and every situation in which the subject should float in front of nothing.
🎥 Film, video and studio production
In film and video production, unwanted reflections from walls, stands, rigs or set elements appear directly in the image and reduce the perceived contrast of the shot. Moving cameras make such reflections even more visible.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used as a wall covering, backdrop, masking material or cover for equipment. Because it can be cut, hung and sewn, it adapts easily to studio setups, sets and temporary production environments.
🎬 Set design and prop building
Set builders and prop makers often need surfaces that visually disappear so that only the intended elements remain visible. Paint can achieve this, but it is delicate and easily damaged during transport and handling.
The VL Flock Sheet is the most durable of our fabrics and can be touched, which makes it practical for props, flats, masks and shadow boxes. It can be applied over large areas quickly and, in the self-adhesive version, also directly onto rigid surfaces.
🏠 Home cinema and projection rooms
In a projection room, every bright surface scatters light back onto the screen and washes out black levels. Walls, ceilings, shelves and equipment are all potential sources of this stray light.
The VL Flock Sheet is very well suited as a lining for the area around the screen, for side walls, borders and light traps. Because it is more cost-effective than our foam materials, it is a realistic option even for larger room surfaces.
🎭 Stage, theatre and event design
On stage, black surfaces are used to hide technology, create depth and direct the audience's attention. Standard molton still reflects visibly under strong spotlights and stage washes.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used for masking, borders, black boxes, illusion effects and large-area coverings. Please note that it is not a fire-retardant material - for applications with fire-protection requirements, Musou Black Fabric FR is the appropriate choice.
🖼 Museums, exhibitions and interior design
In exhibition design, an extremely black surface creates depth, drama and a strong contrast to illuminated objects. Ordinary black paints and fabrics rarely deliver this effect convincingly.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used for display cases, plinths, wall panels, niches and interior accents. Its velvet-like flocked surface additionally provides a high-quality tactile impression.
🔭 Telescopes and astrophotography
In telescopes and camera optics, internal reflections from tube walls, baffles and dew shields reduce contrast and can cause visible artefacts in long exposures.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used to line tubes, dew shields, baffles and light traps. For internal components of precision optics, however, possible fibre shedding caused by the flocking process must be taken into account - where absolute cleanliness is required, Fineshut SP is the better choice.
🔬 Optical laboratories and stray light control
Optical laboratories require materials that suppress stray light and unwanted reflections in experimental setups. Even small amounts of scattered light can degrade the signal-to-noise ratio of a measurement.
The VL Flock Sheet is suitable for optical benches, enclosures, shields, beam dumps and low-reflection backgrounds in the visible range. It helps to create reproducible conditions in experiments with visible light.
🎯 Optical assemblies, baffles and lens hoods
Inside optical assemblies, light that does not follow the intended path ends up as veiling glare. Baffles, apertures and hoods are only effective if their surfaces absorb rather than scatter.
The VL Flock Sheet can be cut precisely and applied to baffles, apertures, hoods and housing interiors. Because of possible fibre shedding, it should be used with care in the immediate vicinity of sensors and image planes.

The VL Flock Sheet can be used as a background, shield or internal lining in inspection stations. This can improve contrast, reduce stray light and create more stable imaging conditions for automated inspection processes.
🏭 Automated Optical Inspection (AOI)
AOI systems in electronics, semiconductor and precision manufacturing require controlled lighting conditions in order to reliably detect even the smallest defects. Reflective surfaces in the surrounding area can make measurements more difficult or cause misinterpretations.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used in inspection chambers, covers, optical baffles and background surfaces to reduce disturbing reflections. For inspection optics that also operate in the near-infrared range, the IR Flock Sheet is the more suitable material.

When measuring displays, projectors or optical components, the surroundings must not reflect any light back onto the device under test. Otherwise contrast and black-level values are systematically distorted.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used to line measurement chambers, cover fixtures or build masks and apertures. This allows contrast and luminance measurements to be carried out under more consistent conditions.
🚗 Automotive interior, HUD and display testing
In vehicle interiors, reflections on windscreens, displays and trim parts are a real quality issue. During development, such reflections have to be traced, isolated and evaluated.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used in mock-ups, test rigs and buck environments to mask reflective surfaces and to identify the actual source of a reflection. For test setups with near-infrared illumination, the IR Flock Sheet should be used instead.
🕺 Motion capture and VR/AR tracking volumes
Tracking systems that work with visible light detect markers, movements or body positions. Reflective materials in the room can generate unwanted signals and confuse the tracking.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used for shielding, masking or lining problematic areas, and it is also popular for AR and VR applications as a neutral, non-reflective surrounding surface. This reduces unwanted reflections and stabilises marker detection.
🧪 Scientific imaging
In scientific imaging, samples, materials or technical systems are documented under defined lighting. Reflections from the environment reduce the signal-to-noise ratio and the comparability of image series.
The VL Flock Sheet can be used as a low-reflection background or shielding material in the visible range. This can make recordings cleaner, higher in contrast and more reproducible.

In setups with visible laser sources, scattered light and unwanted back reflections have to be captured in a controlled way. Bright surfaces distribute this light throughout the entire setup.

Visible Light Performance
The visible light range covers roughly 380 nm to 780 nm and is the range in which cameras, projectors, displays and the human eye operate. This is exactly the range for which the VL Flock Sheet has been optimised: measured as total hemispherical reflectance at an angle of incidence of 8°, it stays below 0.5% across the whole visible spectrum.
Expressed as absorption, the material reaches 99.7% at 500 nm and 99.5% at 250 nm in the ultraviolet range. Its lowest reflectance values lie in the middle of the visible spectrum, which is precisely where the eye and camera sensors are most sensitive. The result is a surface that shows practically no structure, no sheen and no visible edges.
It is important to be aware of the limits of the material: the VL Flock Sheet does not suppress infrared radiation. Absorption drops to about 90.0% at 950 nm and to about 56.3% at 1500 nm. Cameras with a wide wavelength sensitivity or without an IR cut filter can therefore reproduce the material as a black with a slightly reddish tint. If your application involves near-infrared light, the IR Flock Sheet is the correct choice.
Material technology
The VL Flock Sheet consists of a rayon base fabric that has been electrostatically flocked with a low-gloss nylon pile. This process creates a dense, velvet-like surface of upright fibres which does not reflect incoming light specularly like a flat surface would.
Light that enters the pile structure is scattered and absorbed several times between the fibres before it has any chance of leaving the surface again. In addition, the nylon pile itself is low-gloss, so the individual fibres contribute hardly any highlights of their own. According to the safety data sheet, the material consists of approximately 40% cellulose II, 30% polyamide resin and 30% acrylic resin, with a density of about 0.35 g/cm³.
This principle differs fundamentally from smooth black films, paints or standard fabrics. For large areas, curtains and flexible setups the flock structure offers clear practical advantages, because it combines strong optical performance with mechanical flexibility and a surface that tolerates being touched.

Processing and handling notes
The VL Flock Sheet can be used as a fabric to cover objects, or it can be sewn into curtain form and hung. It is especially suitable for larger areas, flexible setups and temporary or permanent light-absorbing backgrounds. The self-adhesive "With Glue" version is practical whenever the material is to be applied directly onto rigid surfaces such as panels, baffles or housing parts.
As with other flocked materials, minor fibre or dust loss may occur due to the flocking process. For this reason, the material should be used with caution when absolute cleanliness is the highest priority or when it is intended for internal components of precision equipment. Please also note that approximately 20 mm at the corners is non-flocked and provided with punch holes; this area is not included in the effective width of 950 mm.
In case of wrinkles or creases, steam from an iron may help improve the condition. However, the iron must not touch the material directly in order to avoid damaging the flocked surface. The material is a flammable solid and is not fire-retardant, so it should be kept away from open flames and hot light sources.
Choosing the right material
Choose the VL Flock Sheet if your application takes place in the visible light range and you need an extremely black, durable and cost-effective surface over a large area. It is especially suitable for photography and film backdrops, darkrooms, home cinemas, stage and set design, exhibition and interior design, machine vision environments and optical setups with visible light.
If your application also involves near-infrared light - for example LiDAR, Time-of-Flight cameras, proximity sensors or NIR photography - the IR Flock Sheet is the better choice. If fibre-free performance and use in direct proximity to sensitive sensors are critical, Fineshut SP is usually more suitable. For the deepest possible visual blackness over large textile surfaces, Musou Black Fabric KIWAMI is our flagship, and where fire protection is required, Musou Black Fabric FR is the appropriate option.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between VL Flock Sheet and IR Flock Sheet?
The VL Flock Sheet is especially focused on very low reflection in the visible light range and is our most cost-effective flocked sheet. The IR Flock Sheet was specifically developed for high absorption in the visible and near-infrared range.
Is the material suitable for 850 nm, 905 nm or 940 nm?
Only to a limited extent. The VL Flock Sheet does not have infrared-suppressing properties; absorption drops to approximately 90% at 950 nm and to approximately 56% at 1500 nm. For near-infrared sensor wavelengths, the IR Flock Sheet is the appropriate material.
Why does the material look reddish in some photos?
Because it does not suppress infrared radiation, cameras with a wide wavelength sensitivity or without an IR cut filter may reproduce it as a black with a slightly reddish tint. To the human eye and to a normal camera it appears deep black.
Can the material be used as a curtain?
Yes. The VL Flock Sheet can be used as a fabric and processed into curtain form. It is therefore well suited for darkrooms, studios, projection rooms and large low-reflection backgrounds.
Does the material have an adhesive backing?
The standard version does not have adhesive tape on the back. In addition, we offer a self-adhesive "With Glue" version for applying the material directly onto rigid surfaces.
Can the material be cut to size?
Yes. The material can be cut to size. When cutting, however, it should be taken into account that small fibres or particles may be generated due to the flock structure.
Can the material be sewn?
Yes. The material can be sewn into curtain form and then hung.
Is the VL Flock Sheet suitable for cleanrooms?
Only to a limited extent. Since small dust or fibre particles may be generated due to the flocking process, it should not be used without testing in areas where cleanliness is the highest priority.
Can the material be used in precision instruments?
For internal components of precision instruments, caution is required because fibre shedding caused by flocking is possible. For such applications, Fineshut SP may be more suitable due to its fibre-free structure.
Can it replace black paint?
In many cases yes. The VL Flock Sheet achieves a higher light absorption rate than Musou Black Paint, is more durable and can be touched. For large areas, curtains and backdrops it is usually the better solution, while paint remains easier to apply on small or complex three-dimensional objects.
Is the material fire-resistant?
No. The VL Flock Sheet is a flammable solid with an ignition point above 400 °C and is not fire-retardant. If a fire-resistant material is required, please use Musou Black Fabric FR.
How can wrinkles be removed?
For wrinkles or creases, steam from an iron may help. However, the iron must not touch the material directly.

The cost-effective ultra-black absorber material for visible light
The VL Flock Sheet combines a total reflectance of less than 0.5% in the visible range with a durable, touchable flocked surface and flexible textile processing. It is a powerful and affordable solution for photography, film, home cinema, design, machine vision and optical setups.

Total reflectance values of our materials are based on the industry-standard AOI 8° index. Total reflectance is the measurement result of combining both diffuse reflection and specular reflection measurements. AOI 8° means that the light is incident at an angle of 8° from the normal.
For example, based on this index, our "Foam" series consistently absorbs light from ultraviolet to near-infrared light ranges. This performance is achieved by the uneven structure derived from the foaming process and the composition of carbon atoms blended into the resin.
We also offer a variety of fabrics. Our entry-level “VL Flock Sheet” is cost-effective and provides strong light-absorption performance in the visible light range. In contrast, our “IR Flock Sheet” provides improved ultraviolet and excellent infrared light-absorption performance, which are the weak points of the entry-level VL Flock Sheet. Our premium fabrics, Musou Black Fabric FR and Musou Black Fabric KIWAMI, are our blackest products and have the best visible-light absorbing performances. The FR variant is treated to be fire-resistant and is great for indoor use. Meanwhile, our flagship, Musou Black Fabric KIWAMI, is the World’s Blackest Fabric in the visible-light range.
Musou Black Paint's light-absorption performance will vary depending on the painting method, so please keep that in mind when applying. For best results, please apply with an air-brush.
